We are moving into a new discussion that will focus on the idea of “Unity and Diversity.” To represent this, we will have a diagram that will assist us in visually understand the concepts we are going to discuss.
The concepts we will discuss are the foundation of our ministry. This pyramid gives us a foundation to top approach of how unity and diversity relate to each of the areas. The bottom three layers (Person of Jesus, Biblical Passages, God’s Principles) are things that we must unify on. The top two layers (Preferences, Practices) are where we enjoy the diversity of the church.
Person of Jesus
At the foundation, that which everything else rests upon is the person of Jesus.
The Bible has made it very clear what happens when Jesus is the foundation. Jesus is called the cornerstone in Isaiah. You will find some very unique language that will be intriguing to you. Isaiah uses language to describe God’s people who are drinking wine and beer to somehow to get to some feel-good life. But instead, they end up in some spiritual mess, as described by vomit covered tables, that leads to moving further and further away from God. And God gave them over to those desires. But there is a resting place, a relationship waiting for them. The people created a structure of religion that God did not give them.
But the Lord says, “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation; the one who relies on it will never be stricken with panic.”
can be written next to this passage as revealing the same truths.
Whatever foundation you set your life on will dictate the movement of your life. Before Jesus was revealed in history, He was still the foundation of faith in God.
Later in the chapter of , there is the description of the farmer’s work. A farmer knows that whichever crop is being grown, it is natural to use the correct tools and equipment to harvest that crop. When we rest in the relationship, the natural worship follows.
Peter is addressing the religious leaders after he (and followers) healed a man. They don’t like the attention it received, and are looking for an explanation. Peter knows that they are asking not to understand, but to control it or even stop it. Instead, Peter reiterated that everything he does, that everything Christ’s followers do, lays in the truth that Jesus was killed, God raised from the dead, and Jesus continues to heal.
Jesus is “the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone.” So when we start seeing and discussing passages like where Jesus says that it is on this rock that he will build his church. We are still living in the fullness and expression of faith in Jesus Christ who is our foundation. Salvation cannot be found in any other person.
The foundational truth that needs to shape us is that Jesus Christ is the only provider of salvation. Any other truth, any alternative message, shows that the foundation has been compromised. And any person, church, or organization that falters on this foundation will not stand strong.

and a diadem of beauty, to the remnant of his people,

and strength to those who turn back the battle at the gate.
7 These also reel with wine
and stagger with strong drink;
the priest and the prophet reel with strong drink,
they are swallowed by wine,
they stagger with strong drink,
they reel in vision,
they stumble in giving judgment.
8 For all tables are full of filthy vomit,
with no space left.
9 “To whom will he teach knowledge,
and to whom will he explain the message?

and with a foreign tongue
the Lord will speak to this people,

give rest to the weary;

that they may go, and fall backward,
and be broken, and snared, and taken.

when the overwhelming whip passes through
it will not come to us,
for we have made lies our refuge,
and in falsehood we have taken shelter”;

“Behold, I am the one who has laid as a foundation in Zion,
a stone, a tested stone,
a precious cornerstone, of a sure foundation:
‘Whoever believes will not be in haste.’
17 And I will make justice the line,
and righteousness the plumb line;
and hail will sweep away the refuge of lies,
and waters will overwhelm the shelter.”
18 Then your covenant with death will be annulled,
and your agreement with Sheol will not stand;
when the overwhelming scourge passes through,
you will be beaten down by it.
19 As often as it passes through it will take you;
for morning by morning it will pass through,
by day and by night;
and it will be sheer terror to understand the message.
20 For the bed is too short to stretch oneself on,
and the covering too narrow to wrap oneself in.
21 For the Lord will rise up as on Mount Perazim;
as in the Valley of Gibeon he will be roused;
to do his deed—strange is his deed!
and to work his work—alien is his work!
22 Now therefore do not scoff,
lest your bonds be made strong;
for I have heard a decree of destruction

24 Does he who plows for sowing plow continually?

16:1 And the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and to test him they asked him to show them a sign from heaven. 2 He answered them, “When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’ 3 And in the morning, ‘It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. 4 An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.” So he left them and departed.
5 When the disciples reached the other side, they had forgotten to bring any bread. 6 Jesus said to them, “Watch and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” 7 And they began discussing it among themselves, saying, “We brought no bread.” 8 But Jesus, aware of this, said, “O you of little faith, why are you discussing among yourselves the fact that you have no bread? 9 Do you not yet perceive? Do you not remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? 10 Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? 11 How is it that you fail to understand that I did not speak about bread? Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” 12 Then they understood that he did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
13 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14 And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. 18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” 20 Then he strictly charged the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.
21 From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. 22 And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord! This shall never happen to you.” 23 But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”
24 Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 26 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul? 27 For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done. 28 Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.” (ESV)
